Meet the Owner, Mary Beth D’Antoni
Mary Beth D’Antoni is a reading expert who has been active in the field of education for over thirty years. She holds a NJ K-12 teaching certificate and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and a Master’s Degree in Education. Her work experience includes: Seventh Grade Language Arts Teacher, Basic Skills Teacher, Supplemental Instructor, Reading Teacher and Adjunct Professor of Reading.
Mary Beth’s educational experience has involved concentrated work in remedial, developmental and enrichment areas for kindergarten through college level students. She has done extensive independent research related to students with learning differences.
She uses a “multi-sensory approach” to teaching reading incorporating the “Orton-Gillingham and Wilson Methods.” At her learning Center, she conducts and organizes workshops for parents, teachers and administrators. In addition, Mary Beth trains teachers to effectively teach reading using a “multi-sensory approach.”
She is the author of “Pathways to the Mind,” a highly successful reading program that incorporates both the “Orton-Gillingham and Wilson Language Programs.”
Mary Beth’s Story: A Message From The Owner
“My story began about 12 years ago. I had taught reading to students who had difficulty learning. I noticed that there was a great need for a program that was geared to the way their brain works.
I delved into research, workshops, books…and I FOUND THE ANSWER. One program will not work for all students. I needed to find a way to integrate all the programs into one. So, I devised a program that included sight words, a tracing method, a phonetic method, along with a visual, kinesthetic and auditory method. In addition, I added imagery into my program. I looked carefully at how a child who is a “right brain thinker” SAW things. Then, I hired an artist to draw pictures to represent letters in a three dimensional form that the students can give meaning to. I put everything together and created a program entitled “PATHWAYS TO THE MIND.”
I started the program after school teaching two students. The results were staggering. These children were not only learning to read, but their confidence was skyrocketing. Their parents were thrilled. The next logical thing to do was to take my program into other homes….and that is what I did. I began to get referral after referral. Before I knew it, word of my program had spread.
Unable to travel to so many homes, I took my business to a small office. That worked for awhile, until my student population grew too big for the office… along with the teachers I hired to teach my additional students. Next, I moved to a space with three classrooms and a waiting room. When I no longer had enough space or teachers to accommodate each student, I hired more teachers. Hiring more teachers was a daunting task. I couldn’t hire just any teacher. I needed to find teachers that were expertise the field of reading., passionate about teaching, intuitive and dedicated. Through much trial and error, I have found those teachers.
In, November 2018, I relocated to a space with numerous classrooms, learning centers, and a secretarial office. My program is now known throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties and we were voted one of the top three learning centers in the Jersey Shore. It has been a long journey to get to where I am. But, it was truly worth it. We change lives for the better. What greater gift could anyone receive!”
