Allenwood, Howell Works & Village Of Allaire

The first European settler in Allenwood was Anaiah Gifford in 1668. The land was previously inhabited by Lenape Indians. Gifford settled in what is now called Spring Meadow Golf Course. Allaire Village or the Village of Allaire was founded back in 1822. This was after James P. Allaire purchased a bog iron manufacturing site called Howell Works. Howell Works was shut down later on in 1846. The village and its surroundings remained intact and preserved and were later gifted to the state of New Jersey to form Allaire State Park and the Historic Village at Allaire. The park is a memorial to Arthur Brisbane, a Hearst editor and last private owner of the land. James Allaire died in 1858.

General Garret D. Wall

Capt. Garret Dorset Wall was a commander of infantry troops at Sandy Hook during the American Revolution. He was elected the Governor of New Jersey but declined the seat. Wall was later appointed as a United States Attorney for New Jersey by President Andrew Jackson. He was elected as a senator in 1834, made feral judge in 1848, and died in 1850. Wall Township NJ is named after him.

Founded In 1851

Wall Township NJ was established on May 7, 1851, after Governor George F. Fort signed an Act of the New Jersey Legislature. The township was carved from Howell Township, which had been formed from Shrewsbury Township earlier on. At the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, Wall Township accepted communities from many areas including what is now Manasquan NJ and Belmar NJ. The first township meeting took place on March 11, 1851, in the home of Isaac Ammermans with Robert Laird, MD as the Chosen Moderator of the Day (Mayor). During this meeting, three committeemen were chosen: James L. Allgor, Samuel L. Allen and Benjamin D. Pearce. This marked the official start of operations in Wall Township NJ.

Later Developments

Around 1900, Italian electrical engineer and inventor Guglielmo Marconi established the American Marconi Wireless Company in Wall Township NJ. Marconi lived in Shark River Hills from 1913 to 1924. Historical reports indicate that the township experienced rapid growth in the 1900s, especially after the Second World War. Wall Township has continued to grow and it’s now a bustling community with nearly 30,000 residents.
